M. Night Shayamalan’s The Last Airbender blows

Reviews of the M. Night Shayamalan’s new film The Last Airbender is receiving bad reviews across the board. In fact E! Online asks whether it is perhaps the worst movie of all time. Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic list the film as the worst of 2010 so far, even going so far as to rank it with Digimon: The Movie and Lisa Kudrow’s awful Marci X.

The film is based on the hugely popular anime TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender which follows the story of Aang, the last person able to manipulate all four of the elements. When the fire nation goes to war with the Water benders and Earth benders, Aang is the las Avatar with the power to stop them.

Shayamalan’s adaptation of the TV series is, according to purists of the series, an epic failure. Poor acting, a hackneyed script, and poorly done 3D that destroys the cinematography is the result of Paramount’s $150 million. To make matters even worse, the story was too complex to follow and impossible for viewers who are not familiar with the anime series.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is much more accomplished in animation with voice overs than real actors (who include Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame). For this reason, we recommend watching the DVD series instead.
