Keeping your car in the green zone

While car pooling or mass transits are great ways to save on petrol, we know those aren’t always available options. Proper maintenance of your vehicle and maximizing your trips is a great idea. Here are some tips on what you can do to help.

  • Keep track of what’s going on with your car. Inspect it every now and again. Things such as a clogged air filter will make your engine work harder and do more damage. Check those tires every time you fill up for the right air pressure and ensure your oil is changed when needed.
  • Try to organize as few trips as possible. Get as many errands done as you can in an area of town you know you’re going to so you don’t have to go back there again the next day.
  • Fill up your car when you stop for petrol. Having to divert every now and again to keep adding petrol to your tank will in the end cost you more. Try staying home as well every now and again instead of going out. While going out partying on the weekends can be fun, you will save money this way and give your car a rest.
  • Keep your car as unladed as you possibly can. Too much weight causes strain which makes your engine work harder and consume more petrol. Try not to idle, speed or constantly brake your car either.
  • A lot of new cars do come with meter to gauge your petrol consumption. If you do have one of these, take a look from time to time to see what your performance is like.
  • Rush hour will do horrible things to the amount of petrol you consume. Rather leave slightly earlier or later than usual.
  • GPS and real time GPS systems will help you plan the most efficient route along with avoiding traffic jams.
  • Open your windows to let your car cool off a bit while you’re in doing a low speed. Keep that aircon in reserve till you’re going faster, as this will make a difference to your fuel consumption
  • Try parking in the shade to prevent fuel evaporation. If you have to park outside, use windshield shades to keep your interior as cool as you can.
