“Toy Story 3” opens at the top of the box

For the second weekend in a row, Disney’s Toy Story 3 is at number one on the box office with a whopping $59.3 million. The third installment of the Pixar-film about the toys Buzz Lightyear and Woody, has successfully beaten Adam Sandler’s Grown-ups and Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day for the second week in a row to become the fourth most successful film this year so far.

The story sees the toys of Andy, now 17 years old, get donated to a children’s daycare centre, which seems all too much like a prisoner of war camp to the beloved toys. A great escape ensues and results in what is being hailed as the funniest and cleverest of three Toy Story films.

The film has received mostly great reviews, while touching on some less than childish themes. It has however been criticised for being sexist and anti-gay, but that’s a result of the rather entertaining running gags about Barbie and Ken. Despite the humour, the movie is full of sentiment and sees creators get emotional with the characters that leave almost all audiences a little bit weepy.

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are available on WantItAll in Blu-ray.
